4 Gentle Reminders About the Healing Process

In the beginning of 2018, I wrote in my journal that I wanted to grow and evolve. You know that song or phrase, “Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it?” (I’m probably paraphrasing here, but you get the picture). Well, what I wished for happened. Towards the second half of that year, I was beginning to be pulled out of my comfort zone. Uncomfortably so.

As someone with all fixed signs in my big three (for my astrology lovers), changing rapidly at such a quick rate felt terrifying. By 2019, I was smack dab in the middle of a spiritual awakening and what many may call the dark night of the soul.

Since then, my life has been different. I have been different. I am learning that I am constantly a student… always, all of the time. I am coming to the understanding that many of the things I am learning, I will have to learn about them in subtle and complex ways over and over again. I am learning that the healing process is a lifetime journey as you gain new perspectives about things and allow yourself to see the world and yourself with new eyes each time you choose to evolve.

Sometimes, the process can feel frustrating. Sometimes, it can feel really beautiful. In both instances, you are slowly putting the light and dark together to see the your relationships, yourself, and the world in a more nuanced way. Here are three things that I am learning about the healing process so far:

  • Do something small, try something new. Habits and healthier coping skills are built over time. Success involves consistently choosing and trusting yourself.
  • Extend grace and compassion to yourself as often as possible. Then, extend some more.
  • This journey is not always for you to know more. Sometimes, it’s just to feel, enjoy, and experience.
  • Healing is a choice for you. Heal because it makes sense for you and wherever you are on your journey. The decision to go deeper and discover more about yourself is completely up you.

Healing is an ongoing journey of self exploration, self discovery, and forgiveness. It takes on so many shapes and forms. Sometimes, you make progress and move forward. Other times, you are right back where you started. We all continue to do this over and over again.

Taking steps forward and backward (in no particular order) is completely normal. In accepting ourselves and our humanity—by giving ourselves grace to be imperfect on some days and magical on others— we come to realize that at any given moment we are exactly where we need to be.
