In the Case of Snapchat v. Instagram…

SNAPGRAM THUMBNAIL

In the case of Snapchat versus Instagram, how does the defendant plead? Here, I imagine Instagram saying, “Sorry, not sorry.”

So…what is this new Instagram development? Today, I went to open up the app, as 300 million of us do a day, and saw Introducing Instagram Stories (NEW!). There is a small Snapchat-like story of the new Instagram feature and the options it offers.

Let’s compare the list, shall we?

  1. Instagram offers to host video footage that will only be available for 24 hours. So does Snapchat.
  2. It offers drawing and text on videos. So does Snapchat.
  3. You can choose who sees your stories. Once you block a user on the app, so does Snapchat.

Snapchat has been around longer, so OF COURSE it has the same and better features.

In its blog, Instagram says, “Instagram has always been a place to share the moments you want to remember. Now you can share your highlights and everything in between, too.”

I mean, I don’t know yet. Can I think about it a little more and then decide?

Don’t get me wrong, I love using Instagram. I get a lot of traffic for my YouTube videos from the site and I like to have a place where I have a mini gallery going on. That is what I see Instagram as, an online portfolio. To me, that is okay, but I guess not as far as Instagram is concerned. I just fear that there will be too much going on with the app.

Instagram has a following that no one else has and this is also the case for Snapchat. They serve two purposes that I need: Instagram for a gallery and Snapchat for stories in the moment. When I think of stories, I will always think of Snapchat. Point blank, period.

Snapchat is like Google to me. You can’t un-google Google. It set such an impact on life on the internet as we know it. Snapchat is not on a Google scale, but it is still a huge deal. In 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for one billion dollars. In 2013, Facebook tried to buy Snapchat for three billion, but was not as successful. I think this could be an alternate way to acquire the mega app on Facebook’s part, but only time will tell.

Right now, I am still Team Snapchat but who knows what Instagram has up its sleeve? All I know is, I am curious to see what is coming on the next Instagram app update.
